Disambiguation icon This page is about the wizard spell. For the status effect, see Sleep (status effect).

Sleep causes the victim to immediately fall into a deep slumber.

Description

Sleep
When a wizard casts a Sleep spell, <PRO_HESHE> causes a comatose slumber to come upon one or more enemies (other than undead and certain other creatures specifically excluded from the spell's effects). All creatures to be affected by the Sleep spell must be within a 15-ft. radius. Creatures in the area of effect must make a Saving Throw vs. Death with a -3 penalty or fall asleep. Monsters with 5 Hit Dice or more are unaffected. Attacks against sleeping opponents never miss.

Gameplay

The caster directs this spell to a point on the current map, and when the spell cast is finished a projectile speeds to the designated spot and then applies the spell to any enemy creatures in the 15-feet radius area of effect centered on the selected spot.

Any enemy creature with less than 5-hit dice/levels is exposed to the sleep spell, although a Saving throw versus Death (with a 3-point penalty) is allowed to resist it.

A sleeping victim is affected by a sleep effect for 30 seconds per level of the mage casting the Sleep spell.

A victim of the spell will fall prone to the ground and be Helpless - a brief color fade and lighting effect is rendered on the victim, and a text is displayed reading the creatures name, and "Sleep'. When the spell expires, a sound effect will audible.

Damaging a victim of this spell won't awaken them, although that is a deviation from the Advanced D&D 2nd Edition ruleset source material.

A player character affected by this spell will show an icon (No. 14) titled "Sleep" on their portrait.

The spell can be blocked by Magic resistance and stopped by a Minor Globe of Invulnerability.

It can also be negated by a Spell Immunity: Enchantment spell.

A Dispel Magic effect can remove this spell from the victim.

Elf and Half-elf creatures have a 90 and 30% resistance to magical sleep effects respectively.

The Wand of Sleep also applies an emulated version of this spell, although the wand uses a different projectile and saving throw than the spell version.

Very few enemies (mostly just certain Sahuagin) in Baldur's Gate II can be affected.

Trivia

The Baldur's Gate game spell version of sleep is in some ways much more powerful than the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd edition Sleep spell.

Of particular note, in the PnP game, a creature put to sleep will awaken when slapped or harmed, taking one round to do so - this isn't implemented in the BG video game version, and thus being put to sleep is very close to a death sentence if the victim is attacked.

Spell Revisions mod has changed this arcane spell, changing its effects, saving throw and scaling. See below for description:
Sleep
Level: 1
School: Enchantment
Range: Long
Duration: 5 rounds
Casting Time: 1
Area of Effect: 30’ radius
Saving Throw: Spell negates

When a wizard casts a Sleep spell, he causes a comatose slumber to come upon one or more creatures. Creatures in the area of effect must make a saving throw vs. spell or fall asleep. Any further attempts to harm the targets will waken them. Opponents with more Hit Dice/levels than the caster are unaffected by this spell. Elves and half-elves are particularly resistant to sleep effects, while the undead and certain other creatures such as dragons and elementals are completely immune to magically induced sleep.

Note:This spell only affects enemy creatures of the caster.
